The light layers and how to dress for unpredictable Spring weather
One day is 80°F (26°C), the next is 40°F (5°C)… Sunny in the morning, rainy and windy in the afternoon… Sounds like an Irish weather. :) How do you even dress for that? When I lived in Ireland, I always had to carry around a jacket, as the weather would change a few times in a day. Here in Minnesota is a little better and less extreme when it comes to Spring weather, yet, we still struggle to what to wear when the temperatures vary. The problem isn’t your wardrobe- it’s how you’re layering it. I’ve already talked about it in my previous post, but today I want to dig deeper and share with you more of the European style examples that you can incorporate into your daily dressing. I am sharing photos from Pinterest.
When you are layering lighter, choose:
Breathable fabrics
Intentional combinations
Easy-to-remove pieces
The key pieces for Spring layering:
Lightweight jackets (trench, blazer, bomber jacket, denim jacket)
All-denim outfit with a print shoe and a trench coat.
Light button-up shirt, layered under a light sweater and a bomber jacket. Add a scarf for warmth.
Pair an oversized blazer with a pair of wide or barrel jeans and sneakers. Add a scarf for warmth.
*Tip: Create Vertical Movement
Open blazer or jacket elongates the body
Avoid cutting your body into too many sections
Breathable knits (thin sweaters, cardigans)
Pair a lighter sweater with a silky skirt and boots.
Layer a white button-up with a bright color sweater and shoes. Add a little brightness in a cold and grey Spring day.
Wear a light-knitted cardigan over a lighter top…
… or wear it on its own as a sweater. Add a scarf for warmth and style.
Versatile bottoms (straight/wide/barrel-leg jeans, trousers, midi skirts)
Pair a wide-leg pants with a graphic tee, faux leather jacket and fashion sneakers.
Dress a wide-leg pants up for work.
Washed black barrel jeans + graphic tee + bomber jacket + black boots or fashion sneakers.
Pair a denim skirt with a fashion sweatshirt and boots/sneakers. Add a bomber jacket if it’s still too cold outside.
Pair a colorful A-line skirt with a short trench or utility jacket. Pair it with boots, fashion sneakers or Mary Jane’s.
Transitional shoes (loafers, sneakers, ankle boots)
Fashion sneakers outfit
Loafers outfit
Mary Jane outfit
Flats in color
White ankle boots outfit- to add some elegance
Through these outfit formulas, I encourage you to experiment with layering this Spring:
Blazer + T-shirt + Straight Jeans + Loafers
Trench + Lightweight Knit + Trousers + Sneakers
Denim Jacket + Dress + Ankle Boots
Cardigan + Tank + Midi Skirt
The last few tips:
Choose lighter colors or softer fabrics for top layers- it prevents that heavy, wintery look
Remember: You don’t need more clothes, you need better combinations!
